The line in question that is blowing the wind of outrage up the skirts of the North Carolina news station is this-and be prepared, because we are not going to censor it and you may want to hide your children to prevent them from seeing it: “Alright, fatty. It is a single line meant as a joke to show the Merchant’s character of Wheatley is the bad guy and has it in for you, but it is also meant to illustrate that Wheatley is a moron. On what must have been an epically bad news day, the station decided to run a piece about the game Portal 2 after one man was mildly (yes, mildly!) upset over a line in the game where the antagonist (voiced by Stephen Merchant) attempts to make fun of the protagonist for being adopted. While Fox News has repeatedly faced harsh criticism for this tactic of taking seemingly harmless issues and inflating them into national catastrophes, it is more an issue with journalism in general than any one outlet, as evidenced by the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina, WBTV, who may have just created the stupidest video game controversy yet. It is like magic stupid, irresponsible magic. But sometimes when it is a slow day, and the news just isn’t acquiescing to demands for something sexy to cover, you just have take a “what the hell” approach and create your own controversy out of thin air. Disasters are fun too, but controversy, especially with moral outrage attached, can really differentiate one media outlet from another. There is nothing quite as appealing to a news outlet as controversy. So if I was in the mood to play a game there I have a wealth of choice, I would estimate there are always about 30 servers with a good player count and an acceptable ping (under 50). There isn’t but there are always plenty of servers with a good ping and nearly full. I occasionally play the official portal modes out of curiosity and I regularly check the portal server browser to see if there is anything of interest to me.
I use quickmatch function in AOW (which is a mode in the game 2042) because it is quick (wellnamed) and puts me into full servers with a good ping (20ms) in about ten seconds, my longest wait has been about twenty seconds. I don’t really pay attention as I have never seen a bot (a computer controlled player that is) in one of the AOW servers. It brings me into games playing a mode I enjoy and almost always full of players, fair enough occassionally people will drop out but anytime I am curious and look at the player count both teams are in the number of 60’s. Generally I do not as I am plenty satisfied with the quick match option of AOW. I browse the servers which show me the number of people connected to that server and some information which I can decide wether I want to join that server. They are part of a graphical user interface which link your computer to servers that it can then join so you can play an online game with people. I mean if you are being pendantic I guess they are not servers. What are they then? If they aren’t servers why are they in the server browser.
